CONSTELLATIONS . February 2022 . Gallery A3, Amherst, MA . Sue Katz
Sue Katz
Each work is a “constellation,” a cluster of ideas and materials forming a composition.
They fit together snugly like a puzzle.
Generations, family and relationships all wiggle their way into my consciousness saying, ‘Hello!’
As I work, I enjoy the procedural; as I finish, I reveal the conceptual and emotional, a spirit of connections.
This show presents in two parts along the two long walls:
• a retrospective anniversary of constructs show work from the past 20 years;
• the “signs” combine the visual and the verbal to protest or to tell a story.

- CONSTRUCTS -
I call these abstract works “constructs” combining paint and found objects. I scavenge old, worn, weathered metal and wood from dumpsters, industrial sites, beaches and woods. I assemble these treasures now on my studio floor moving them about and putting them together with an inner eye focused on meaning. Painterly gesture within structure, rich earthy surfaces within formal shapes describe decades/generations. Process and materials fuse together forming content of family/lineage. As I work I enjoy the procedural; as I finish I wonder about the conceptual – thought and language reveal the title, the spirit of relationships and connections.
