STORIES I TELL MYSELF
Diane Steingart
With her new exhibit, STORIES I TELL MYSELF, Diane Steingart continues to explore her artistic journey between the inner world of memories, feelings, and experiences and the outer manifestation of visual images.
Diane’s work touches on feelings of love, loss, fear, sadness, and joy. Both psychological and spiritual, her artwork can be either abstract or semi-representational. In many ways, it is a form of art therapy (for herself), but she hopes that other people can find resonance in what she captures visually. Her work often has a dreamlike quality, and physical symbols such as houses and dwellings, windows, and landscapes feature in the work.
A mixed media artist, Diane works by experimentation, although she begins her creative journey in the same way each time. She loves problem-solving and putting the pieces of an artistic puzzle together. Working on paper, canvas, or wood, Diane starts by creating marks and shapes, using acrylic paints and found objects to create the underpainting. Using paint and collage and employing a variety of materials to create depth and texture, she layers her work extensively. Each layer modifies the effect that came before and evolves into the next. “The process can be challenging,” she says, “but often leads to revelations and insights. And when it goes smoothly, it is a joy!”
Each artwork becomes a new adventure. Diane’s studio practice is a meditation where she is aware of the present moment. Her attention and focus are on the image, and this focus allows the images to emerge. She finds that when she stays with her heart and her intuition, the work has a richness that doesn't exist when she is solely in her head, trying to figure something out cerebrally.
Before devoting herself full time to making art, Diane was a clinical social worker with an interest in helping people suffering from trauma by reconnecting with their creativity.
