The joyful energy behind both musical and painterly improvisation is central to my creative work. Each piece begins with a hint—a sensation from a dream, an image, a glint of light, even a random note or brushstroke—and unfolds playfully into space or time, each result being slightly different and often surprising. The process of creating paintings this way is intuitive and fun, and reminds me of the joy all of us creatures can take in the miracle of our existence. My hope is that a little of this energy resonates and remains available to viewers in the work itself.
