Having been an oil painter for more than twenty years, I began to work digitally in the late 1990s, driven at first by the desire to use the image-capturing power of photography in combination with the freedom that oil paint provided. Gradually this opened the door to accomplishing things digitally that would be impossible with oil paint. I think there is a parallel here to the emergent use of oil paint in the 15th century, supplanting egg tempera because it made possible so many visual effects that reflected new ways of seeing and thinking. Traditional elements like color relationships, composition, mark-making, grids (and their subversion), surface and space, randomness and ambiguity are fundamental in these works, but their power is harnessed not for formal reasons as an end in itself, but to create works that pose questions and radiate mystery, evoke fascination, and reflect intensely the experience of this event of our being.
Each of the above works is a photo-synthesis (multiple digital images brought together and worked with in Photoshop). The images are printed in Epson Ultrachrome HDX ink on Velvet Fine Art paper. The image files are ultra-high resolution and can be printed in a variety of sizes.
