Becoming Form

My practice of Buddhism is a deep influence on why and how I work. I try to create an experience without what is called “mental discursiveness,” trying to figure out meanings, places and references. I’d like the viewer to directly experience the color, space, and movement of the painting.

Beyond that, I paint using an idea of colors and then see where that takes me. I know that I have the freedom to change, correct, leave in or take away as I work, which is very freeing. Therefore, my paintings do not have a liner progression. I only paint with oil which gives me this freedom.

The “subject matter” of my paintings in recent years has emerged as I allow previous layers to “become” a form. This approach has been evolving since 2019. It comes from an aspect of looking at what is happening as I paint...just being present and able to stop or shift direction...literally and figuratively.
